My Morning Jacket: Z

Hi-de-ho. It's snowing outside, but I don't care. I've found the best album for this autumn yet. My Morning Jacket has knitted together a breath-taking album with a mixture of great rocking tunes and also mellower bits and bobs.

I'm not in the mood to go any deeper with this review. I'll just turn up the heating and the volume in my soundsystem a few notches as well.

Downloading and other bits of geek-info

Two new Finnish download-portals have opened up for business - Helsingin Sanomat with Musiikkilataamo and Ilta-Sanomat with their own Ilta-Sanomat - Musiikki. After a mere browse through both of the new services, I have to congratulate Musiikkilataamo on a better positioning of their service. Also, a great thing about these two services is that you don't need to download a new player to purchase music. I have to say though that I'm a huge fan of iTunes, which by the way, has released v5.0!

Download.NetAnttila.com and iTunes Music Store will be challenged by these two new services, and especially Musiikkilataamo will surely prove to be a trustworthy contender.

Roku-mentti

Joensuussa järjestetään 11.-13.11 Rokumentti, nimikkeen alla Rockelokuvafestivaali. Ohjelmistossa on mm. Andreas Haaning Christiansenin 22 Pistepirkoista kertova dokkari Sleep Good - Rock Well.

Ohjelmisto vaikuttaa vähintäänkin mielenkiintoiselta, mutta täältä etelästä taitaa tulla hiukkasen pitkä matka näille festareille. Hienoa kuitenkin, että tälläistä järjestetään. Joensuu näyttää jälleen kerran olevansa Suomen aktiivisimpia kaupunkeja, josta hattua nostettakoon.

Taidan tyytyä Rakkauteen ja Anarkiaan, liput on jo hankittu viiteen rainaan.

IS BOB DYLAN THE ANTI-IDOLS?

Hi all!

What a week! New Orleans reduced to a swamp - American authorities stretched - hard to know how the people of New Orleans can move on with their lives after Katrina.

I interviewed Stephen Malkmus (ex-of Pavement) yesterday and asked him what he thought of the crises and how GW Bush would cope with the growing critisism. He answered me that whoever was in power would have struggled with the relief aid and the American media especially had it in for Bush after being cut out of Iraq and not given full access there. He said rightly they had reported New Orleans/Katrina as they saw it. However it was clear talking to Malkmus that the European media had covered the event much more criticly-and as Stephen mentioned to me-it was Mother Nature after all. Fair point-New Orleans could be the first city to go from Global Warming.

Stephen Malkmus's latest solo album "Face the Truth" (Domino) is his best yet-up there with his best Pavement work-if your looking for something melodic, interesting, weird and beautiful-check it out now.

Columbia Records has always been in many people's eyes the Artists label, Dylan, Johnny Cash, Springsteen, Simon & Garfunkle, Laura Nyro and many others. The cradle of nuturing great songwriting throughout the 60's and 70's. Anything with the famous Red label would be worth aquiring as a sign of quality. Of course times change, and the output of Columbia (not to mention the Red label), have moved with the times-just another major sub-label nowadays. One exception has been the Bob Dylan Bootleg series, a selection of unreleased or rare tracks, concerts, tours etc. the series has been ongoing since the mid 90's. The 7th in the series has just been released by Columbia (red label intact!), Bob Dylan "No Direction Home: The Soundtrack". The album covers Dylan from 1961 to the release of Blonde on Blonde in 1966. Lots of unreleased and different versions of Dylan classics are included-but most importantly-the album shows how popular music found it's voice, how it became a political and social phenomenom the world over-and if you like-why i'm writing this blog now! These are big claims-but ultimately pop music was lyricaly redundant pre Dylan abandoning his folk roots and picking up an electric guitar. "Bringing it All Back" (1965), "Highway 61" (66) & "Blonde On Blonde" (66), the latter a double album (we think bands are prolific these days!), reshaped Rock & Pop music forever. The Mercury Sound. as these trio of albums are referred to bleed with punkrock intensity, the greatest lyrics ever!-and songs that few artists have matched before or since. Tracks from these albums-albeit different versions (but just as great) are represented on "No Direction Home". A movie accompanying the release about Dylan in this period, Directed by Martin Scorsese, should hit Finnish screens soon-i hope! Bob Dylan's relevance is still pertinant-just check out "A Hard Rains Gonna Fall" in light of Hurricane Katrina.

Dylan is a timely reminder that there is a musical revolution going on as we speak. Bands and artists with credibility are releasing un-safe records and increasingly BECOMING the mainstream. The Killers, Franz ferdinand (both approaching 5 million sales for their debut albums), Coldplay, Keane,
Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips, Scissor Sisters, Gorillaz, The Strokes, Death Cab For Cutie-the list goes on-are all million sellers. Inventive and original music is no longer in the indie getto-people want substance with there music.

Unfortunately, in Finland, this has'nt really been reflected-we are still living the walking talking Idols hang over-which increasingly the rest of the world has got over. As a new series of the "talent" show starts on Finnish TV, and the release of the original Idols' winner Hanna Pakarinen's "Stronger" album is released-i can't stomach this level of waste anymore. With so much good new talent coming out of Finland NOW, it's awful that the IDOLS rules the airwaves and our TV screens. I fell in love with David Bowie as a kid because he was a sexy, androgynous alien-not a fork lift driver!!! We don't want pop-stars you can meet on the street-we want larger than life personalities-who-most importantly can do things we cant-that's why they are special! If you believe that music should have a passion and reflect that passion for life, say something to you, not be contrived by THE MAN, move you to tears or joy, reflect the world you live in, make you feel sexy, sad, human, special and different-put a stop to this now, make that difference. It's up to you-buy good music!!!!

Kevin @ Åbo, Helsinki 23.8.2005

Yesterday it was time for Art Goes Kapakka, which brought Kevin to my secondary livingroom i.e. Åbo at Uudenmaankatu.

I didn't quite catch the first part of their set, but the latter part provided everyone with entertaining pop. I guess they called it post-something. Have I ever told you that I hate genre labels?

Quite apart from the actual gig, I've been thinking about music in general. Quite a number of people (mostly girls) have been raving about Kevin for quite a while now, but none of them have ever mentioned Kevin's music. They've been talking about this and that and especially how sweet a guy Finn Andersson is and how amazingly hot he is. I've got absolutely no objections on the subject, but after hearing people's opinions on the subject, I've started to have serious doubts whether most people have any real interest in music at all.

Maybe that's being a bit cynical, but hey, that's my privilege. :)

Suomirokkia Muistikortilla

Oho. Kaikkea ne keksii. Epe & Co. ovat lanseeranneet Suomen ensimmäisen musiikkijulkaisun puhelimen muistikorttina. Poko Rekordsin Suomirokkia 10 lupaa toimia ainakin Nokian kännyissä: N70, N90, 7710, 6681, 6680, 6630, 6230i , 6230, 9300, 9500, 7610, 6670, 6260 ja 3230.

Aika näyttää, onko tälläisellä julkaisulla mitään kaupallisia mahdollisuuksia, mutta täytynee nostaa hattua Pokon väelle, koska he ovat olleet aina ensimmäisenä kokeilemassa uusia innovaatioita.

The Rasmus: Hide From The Sun

The Rasmus is releasing their new album in a bit. The new single "No Fear" has already been playing in the Finnish radio quite a bit. I'm not totally convinced that the new album is just as good as the previous two, but that's only my humble opinion. I'm sure people will prove me wrong within a couple of months.

Make up your mind and listen to snippets of the new album through The Rasmus Jukebox.

IS THERE TOO MUCH MUSIC? by Nick Triani

Hi all,
my ears are still ringing from the Dinosaur Jr show at Tavastia, Helsinki last wednesday (17th August). I had ear plugs in, but it wasn't enough, J & Lou had their amps on 11! I watched the encore (Just Like Heaven & Freakscene) from the bar area, people were flinching in pain. Despite the volume, the band were in good shape, not a real word to the audience (quite a relief after the recent spate of bands all proclaiming "Helsinki, it's great be here!), they were tight and played there first 3 albums with a knowing maturity.

The last week has been a rush for me, family departed after a two and a half week visit, the new Treeball album finally taking some shape, and the first real dead period this year for new music. Having a radio show on Radio Helsinki which tries to play new music every week can be draining- getting hold of new music from the labels that fits the profile of my show can be also. However, this year has been like a tidal wave of great and new bands releasing really good albums-it's been hard to keep up and actually listen to the damn things!

It feels strange but acts i love like New Order and Beck (to name two) have released really strong albums that already feel like a distant memory and appear to have already fallen off 2005's musical Radar. Hal (the irish band that have out-popped the Thrills) started a slew of releases on the rejuvinated Rough Trade Records with there excellent self-titled album. RT followed this with the european release of Arcade Fire's awesome "Funreal", Anthony & the Johnson's-"I am A Bird", Gruff Rhys's (SFA lead man) Yr Atal (it's welsh!), the Fiery Furnaces ep album, Adan Green's "Gemstones", Oneida's "The Wedding", albums from British Sea Power and The Brakes and finally amongst others, Sufjan Steven's "Come on feel the Illinoise" (at this point album of the year!). This is just one label-all these records in there own way essential!

Not to be outdone, the newly minted Domino Records have released Lou Barlow's underated "Emoh", Four Tet's "Everything Ecstatic", Stephen Malkmus's "Face the Truth" (his best post-Pavement offering), Smog's "A River Ain't too Much to Love", Sons and Daughters "The Repulsion Box", The Junior Boys' "Last Exit" not to mention Orange Juice's collection of Postcard singles-"The Glasgow School". It's only August and Domino will unleash Franz Ferdinands' second album next month. Blimey!!!!
But hey! it's just not the indie labels that are foisting music on us like it's a coming Apocalypse-the big guns have been loading our ears all year. Oasis, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, White Stripes, Gorillaz, Daft Punk, Eels, Ben Folds, System of A Down (TWO albums!!!),Turin Brakes,Pernice Brothers, Bright Eyes (TWO albums!!!), The Coral- just to come a new Supergrass & Mew.

Let's not forget the bands that are reforming or have been away for ages-Teenage Fanclub, The Go-Betweens, The Posies, Bob Mould, Frank Black solo-and next month, God Forbid!!!, the first album in 30 years from Big Star. Ouch!!! my ears are bleeding.

What about Finland-has'nt been that much has there? Just on an indie level, there have been records by Ben's Diapers, The Tunes, Liekki, The Sugarrush, Scaramangas, Ultrasport, All Stars, Viola, Boomhauer, Ultramariini, Astrid Swan,
Red Carpet and Baby Sweetcorn, The Latebirds & John Mcgregor (List from onechord.net). Hey-not enough Finnish indie? You can always purchase the very good 4 cd box set "Sivulliset"-finnish undergorund music between 1985-2000.
Too many genres and records not mentioned-new U.K bands-The Magic Numbers, Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs, Hard-Fi. Female artists, Martha Wainwright, Karen Ann, Orenda Fink, Tori Amos, Roisin Murphy-a new Kate Bush album by Christmas. Wow!!

All the great re-issues that come constantly-first 3 Cure deluxe editions. Dinosaur Jr etc. The oscar goes to, the Prince of his generation, ladies & gentleman-RYAN ADAMS. Not content with the double CD he dropped in the summer "Cold Roses", there is another album coming in September with his band The Cardinals, based on his hometown. As if this were not enough, and we COULD take any more, Adams releases another album in December called "29", I think. Not to make the album too short, this album is 9 songs lasting 9minutes each, recounting Adams oh so difficult 20's-you know the decade he became a songwriting genius/boy wonder! News just in, Cameron Crowe comissions Adams to write a song for his new movie, Adams goes to the studio to cut said song and leaves with a new album of 20 songs. Obviously this will be released between Christmas and New Year!!!!

The main thing to say about all this is, not to moan, but to enjoy-we are in a GOLDEN AGE of new music and great albums-why complain-it might be awhile before we have this much new stuff to excited about.

By the way did i tell you about the new Davendra Banhart, Super Furry Animals blah blah blah blah.......!!!!!!

Mew: and the Glass Handed Kites

Pheww. I always knew that these guys really know what they're doing, but their new album really gives me the chills. I've been listening to the preview copy for a week now, and I just can't remember when music was this good. (Apart from The Sugarrush of course..)

The whole album is less pop than their previous 'album' Frengers, and might even be a bit artsy-fartsy, but the three successive songs in the middle of the album (Apocalypso, Special, The Zookeeper's Boy) are serious spinetinglers. Most of the songs in the album are actually mixed together for a semi-operatic listening-experience. :)

Without a doubt the greatest album in 2005.

Tracklist for Mew: and the Glass Handed Kites

1. Circuitry Of The Wolf
2. Chinaberry Tree
3. Why Are You Looking Grave?
4. Fox Cub
5. Apocalypso
6. Special
7. The Zookeeper's Boy
8. A Dark Design
9. Saviours Of Jazz Ballet
(Fear Me, December)
10. An Envoy To The Open Fields
11. Small Ambulance
12. The Seething Rain Weeps For You

CDOASS @ Liberte, Helsinki 30.7.2005

Hiyas.

Last weekend I checked out the crazy kids from CDOASS. I've been listening to their great "Extra Fingers" album, and I realised that they were touring Finland, so I just couldn't miss this one.

Note to self: Liberte was a great venue. Be sure to check it out more often.

CDOASS played a mean gig. I have to always gasp in awe, when I see Swedish acts on stage. They're always just so good! Check out their song Elevator Shaft, it's fun kee! :)

I updated the keikkakalenteri as well.

Daiga Daiga Duu avaa minigallerian!

Kuopion keskustassa sijaitseva Daiga Daiga Duu-putiikki
laajentaa tarjontaansa avaamalla tiloihinsa ehkä maailman
pienimmän gallerian. Daiga Daiga Duu tarjoaa suomalaisten
pienten vaatemerkkien designia, 60-70-lukujen valikoituja
second hand-aarteita sekä pienkustannesarjakuvia ja -levyjä.
Näiden lisäksi putiikkiin avataan 27.7.05 minigalleria.
Galleria järjestää kutsunäyttelyitä tekijöiltä
ympäri suomen.

Näyttelytilan tulee avaamaan KEBAB-KABEB -näyttelyllään
Siilinjärveltä kotoisin oleva nykyään turkulaistunut Tomi
Leppänen. Tomi tunnetaan mm.

;) Josef Matula roxx!

Illan pääakti olikin Dälek, jonka musiikkia voisi kuvata.. (..tai voisi ainakin yrittää kuvata) Public Enemy meets Slayer at a Sonic Youth gig and gets pissed off.

50 Cent

Popbitch kertoo seuraavaa:

50 cent has girl in stitches

"Autographs are so passé. 50 Cent left a female fan with a far more memorable souvenir when he recently visited London. The charming rapper took her back to his hotel from China White and shagged her so hard that her vagina was torn. A hospital visit was required to stitch up the damage."

Avainsana lienee "Charming rapper"..

More gigs, Nina Gordon et al.

Busybusybusy..

Last week I saw Lenny Kravitz and Iron Maiden and The Suggies have been raving about the comeback of Wild Force! They also went to see Teenage Fanclub @ Tavastia, which I unfortunately had to miss. Today most of us will head to Nosturi for Astrid Swan. Coma & Paati are in Turku, because they wanted to check out TFC once more.

I'm sorta glad that Ilkka moved back to Finland from UK. Things seem to be a bit messed up over there..

PS. Check out Nina Gordon's versions of Straight Outta Compton (NWA) and 18 and Life (Skid Row)! They're cute.

Audioslave, ..And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - 29/06/05 Jäähalli, Helsinki + Bulgaria

I have to say that my expectations of the gig weren't too high. The AYWKUBTTOD-support slot was somewhat of a surprise. A pleasant surprise, I might add. Their set was excellent. It was pure genius from the beginning to the end. I'm not sure if they always have two drum kits on stage, but did they ever put up a great show with them yesterday! Tom Morello, clad in Bob Dylanesque vest, guest-starred on one song, which sent shivers down my spine big time.

Audioslave was great too, even though I'm not too impressed by Chris Cornell. In between their own hits, they played some RATM, and Chris played Black Hole Sun just by himself, and the crowd did go apeshit on him. In a positive sense that is. If there is a Kinkt award for guitarheroes, the award would definitely go to Tom Morello, he has to be the most original axe-meister around. And oh yes, the rhythm-section aint too bad either.. Tim & Brad are t-i-g-h-t.

Even if the gig was pretty darn good, I still decided to head for the release party of the new issue of Bulgaria Magazine at The Rose Garden. A decent party, tasty mohitos and good music. (I guess it was Sampo DJ'ing.) The mag's as fine as ever - at least browse through a copy if you find one. You'll love it.

Sivulliset

This just in!

This is the press release for a 4CD-boxed set of Finnish indie artists. The Sugarrush is featured with the hit-song Rock 'n Roll Boy. The compilation seems like the greatest idea ever, and I'm totally waiting to have a listen.

SIVULLISET - VALIKOIMA SUOMALAISTA VAIHTOEHTOROCKIA

Release 17.8.2005

Sivulliset - valikoima suomalaista vaihtoehtorockia
vuosilta 1985-2000 on upea neljän levyn kansio, joka
kokoaa yksiin kansiin jotain, mitä ei ole aiemmin
koottu. Levyillä esiintyy kaikkiaan 88 artistia, jotka
ovat julkaisseet musiikkia suuryhtiöistä
riippumattomien levymerkkien kautta. Kansio kattaa
suomalaisen vaihtoehtorockin kehityskaaren 1980-luvun
puolivälistä vuosituhannen loppuun ja heijastelee
kulloinkin vallinneita tyylejä. Mukana ovat niin
80-luvun lopun tuimat rockbändit kuin 90-luvun
puolivälin romanttiset pop-yhtyeetkin. Levyillä on
tilaa niin tylyille tykittäjille kuin hiljaisille
pohdiskelijoillekin.

Sivulliset-boksi kunnioittaa artisteja, jotka
ansaitsevat osakseen enemmän huomiota kuin ovat
koskaan saaneet. Niistä monista olisi voinut -
joistain jopa pitänyt - tulla jotain paljon suurempaa.
Muutamat kansion artisteista ovat pystyneet tekemään
ansiokkaan 20-vuotisen uran rockin valtavirtaa
väistellen, toisten diskografiaan kuuluu ainostaan
yksi omakustannesingle. Sivulliset-kansio sisältää
runsaasti materiaalia, jota ei ole koskaan aiemmin
julkaista cd:llä. Mukana on myös useita kappaleita,
joita ei ole koskaan aiemmin ollut kaupallisesti
saatavilla - muun muassa julkaisemattomia versioita ja
demoja.

Viisi tuntia mielenkiintoista ja yllättävää musiikkia
sisältävän Sivulliset-kansion tutuimpiin esiintyjiin
kuuluvat muun muassa Shadowplay, Noitalinna Huraa!,
22-Pistepirkko, Jimi Tenor & His Shamans,
Radiopuhelimet, Mana Mana, Aknestik, Circle, The
Barefoot Brothers, Supperheads, Sweetheart, Lemonator,
Karkkiautomaatti, The Flaming Sideburns, Crash, Opel
Bastards, Giant Robot, Ultramariini, Aavikko ja Ville
Leinonen & Valumo. Komean ja kulttuurihistoriallisesti
merkittävän julkaisun täydentää 36-sivuinen kirjanen.

Kokoelman on toimittanut Tero Alanko ja Jouni
Tamminen.

Pheww. This album has been playing lately in the Kinkt-office a lot. Even if metal hasn't been my cup of tea for a while, there's no way you could not love this one. Mezmerize is the first album from a series of two, Hypnotize should come out in November. Make yourself happy, and go get the record, you'll be dancing to B.Y.O.B. in no time.

The Sugarrush: Useless Information (Kinkt)

By: Antti Luukkanen

Viiden rykäisyn ep todistaa kompaktisti, miksi The Sugarrushiin on helppo ihastua. 90's (Salute) paketoi kolmeen minuuttiin niin Sladea kuin klassista power poppia. Samaa bilenostatusta on näppärässä Weekend Warriorissa, mutta varttitunnin sulavin siivu on silti isompaa pop-estetiikkaa hyväkseen käyttävä nimikappale, jota Firevisionista tutun Mikko Tammisen syntsat vetävät piirun verran valtavirtaan päin.

Oh My.

AKT, the body for Finnish record labels has charged 28 Finns on file-sharing.

Oh my.

Do you think that Evian could sue everyone who drinks tap water?

But hey, you guys can always share The Sugarrush song, that is available on the Kinkt website.. Here's a direct link. The Sugarrush: Useless Information MP3.

Busy bees

This week is going to be busy as hell. Daniel has gone back home to Sweden for a while, and he'll be offline for a couple of days, and I'm finishing my dissertation as we speak, so I'm tied up with that 'til the end of the week.

Planning to promote a gig for my mates, Wiidakko, I guess they should have a gig in Vaasa, probably mid-August.. I'll see what i can do.

Ilkka says hi!

Testing out the new blog..

Just reading the new Fly Magazine. They've covered The Mars Volta gig I recently went to at the Brixton Academy. Everyone seems to discreetly dislike their new stuff.. Heck, I'm waiting for their gig at Provinssirock like hell!

Lot of things happening at the Kinkt camp, I'll keep you posted ASAP.

Hugs & Kisses.

The Sugarrush: Useless Information EP

We've been loving The Sugarrush for ages already, but not too long ago, Kinkt Records got the possibility to release their new EP. At least I've been personally extatic about the whole project from the beginning.

The dynamic production-duo Firevision, have helped to realise the project, for which I am at least as extatic as I am about the whole band. They have been in demand a lot these days, as they have their fingers in a few pies at the moment. They've been involved in Liekki's album "Rajan Piirsin Taa" and also on the 69 Eyes single "Feel Berlin". The finnish expression on them would be: "kuuminta hottia"!

The EP has been pushed a lot by a lot of great people. Tomppa, Nina, Rami & Janne @ Playground Music Scandinavia have pushed all the right buttons for the EP to get into the right shops, media, industry people and so on. They truly rock! Also Miettinen @ Kitarama/YleX, Nick Triani & Lasse Kurki @ Radio Helsinki, Jocka @ Stara.fi, Henry @ Roklintu.. Bless you all, you really know your music!

Our special love goes to Onechord.Net. It is maybe the only relevant truly independent media of the world. He knows his stuff better than anyone, and he truly means every single word he says. They're a gift from above, the guy's a god... ok, I'll skip the metaphysics, but you get the picture.. Be sure to visit his site! It's commercial-free, 100% dedicated website for the most interesting finnish bands on the planet!! It's greAT!

By the way, check out this cool video from The Sugarrush's new album-sessions.

New blog

Hiyas.

We are now open for service. Additional information will be put up as we go along. The Kinkt-blog will provide you with stories on (mostly) music-related topics. Kinkt loves to have fun as well, so don't expect us to be always too serious.

For now, I'll be writing this on my own, but I'm hoping to get a few mates to chip in with their exciting stories about music, pop-culture and life in general.

Clickety-click on the links on the right side, and you'll get an idea what our world is all about.
